Star Wars: Why Obi-Wan Kenobi Didn’t Know Anakin Skywalker Had Survived

Screenwriter Joby Harold explained why Obi-Wan Kenobi was unaware that Anakin Skywalker is still alive in the new Star Wars series, which airs every Wednesday on the Disney+ platform.

Since May 27, the Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi series explores the unique adventures of the famous character played by Ewan McGregor. In exile on Tatooine ten years after his fratricidal fight against his former padawan Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Knight finds himself caught up in his past when an old friend sends him a message begging him to come to his aid…

Many fans were particularly moved by the end of the series’ second episode, seeing Obi-Wan learn from Inquisitor Reva that Anakin is alive and well, but now answers to the name Darth Vader. A major revelation for the Jedi, who will no longer be able to escape the consequences of his past as a Jedi master!

A number of internet users, however, were surprised that in ten years, Kenobi never had the opportunity to learn that his former padawan was still alive. It is indeed surprising that he never made the connection between Anakin and Darth Vader, especially since the Jedi had been able to witness the “birth” of the Dark Lord, during the massacre of the Padawan children by his former protege. in the movie Revenge of the Sith.

Screenwriter Joby Harold returned for our colleagues from The Wrap on this decisive moment in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, revealing that the subject was the subject of many discussions before filming:

This is not my idea. It’s something that I discovered along the way, and that I had to have confirmed by the creative consultant Pablo Hidalgo to whom I asked the following questions: ‘What does he know?’ ‘Does he know who Darth Vader really is?’ ‘Can he make the connection between the two characters?’ ‘What exactly is his level of information?’ ‘How isolated is it?’ ‘Where is Vader at this time?’ ‘What is his reputation and how well known is he in the galaxy?’

From these pieces of the Star Wars narrative puzzle, the Scottish screenwriter thus took as a starting point Vader working in the shadows and secretly directing the Inquisitors launched on the heels of the last Jedi still alive.

Reva’s obsession with Kenobi is actually that of the Dark Lord, and episode 3 allowed us to learn that beyond a simple desire for revenge, Vader intends to subject his former Jedi master to the pains that were inflicted on him on Mustafar, when his body was completely burned by a river of lava!

Episodes of the Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi series are available every Wednesday exclusively on the Disney+ platform.
