Not long ago, Starfield became controversial for something that was out of its purview, and it was being destroyed by players because of it. What happened ?
The Steam Awards 2023 delivered their verdict a few days ago. As a reminder, this is an awards ceremony on the Valve platform with a particularity: it is the community which designates the winners via a vote. And indeed, Starfield won a very specific prize. Unfortunately, this did not fail to provoke the anger of the players. The problem is that some of them expressed their dissatisfaction in a way that some people judged to be unfair.
Starfield causes controversy and is destroyed on Steam
Bethesda’s RPG was nominated in one and only category at the 2023 Steam Awards: “Best Innovative Gameplay”, and it managed to win. Opposite Starfield, we found Remnant 2, but also Shadows of Doubt and Contraband Police. As one might expect, this did not go down well with everyone, and complaints were heard on social networks. “ I’m pretty sure this is a joke on the part of PC gamers “, ” What did he innovate? The way to make the game as boring as possible? », We could read, among other things.
On the one hand, the community’s astonishment is understandable. Starfield does not have gameplay that could be described as innovative. It makes more use of a proven formula well known to fans. So, players think it’s a joke from some people. In the end, whatever the reasons, what interests us today is what followed on the Valve platform. The game received a new wave of negative reviews, causing its average to drop even further.
In itself, before this controversy, Starfield already had a score of “Average” for more than 85,000 evaluations (it is at more than 90,000 at the time of writing these lines). Nevertheless, new opinions were added to the balance, and for one reason: the distinction he obtained. We may not like the game, but it seems slightly unfair to attack him precisely for that, without citing other reasons to support his point. Let’s not forget that in this case, Bethesda’s latest won this award thanks to player votes, even if it was perhaps intended to be a joke.
A rise approaching for the RPG?
The results are therefore a little gloomy for Starfield. At least, for the moment, because that could change in 2024. Yes, its creator and Xbox do not intend to abandon it anytime soon. Already, we suspect that modders will keep it alive for a while, but regular updates are also to be expected. “In 2024, we will be rolling out updates approximately every six weeks, with our next major patch arriving in February “, the editor explained to us. We are soon approaching the implementation of this huge patch which looks promising. In addition, this year we will see the arrival of the expansion called Shattered Space.
