State of natural disaster recognized for June earthquake in western France

The state of natural disaster has been recognized for 10 municipalities in Charente-Maritime and three municipalities in Deux-Sèvres hit by an earthquake on June 16, according to a decree published in the Official Journal on Friday.

With a magnitude of 5.3 to 5.8 according to the National Seismic Surveillance Network (Renass) and the French Central Seismological Bureau (BCSF), the strongest earthquake felt in France since the beginning of the 2000s occurred at the beginning of evening on June 16, without causing any casualties.

The Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Bchu had promised the triggering of the natural disaster judgment from June 19, ensuring that the compensation would be paid in the coming weeks.

The bill for this earthquake should rise around 290 million euros, according to an estimate from France Assureurs received by AFP on Tuesday.

The state of natural disaster has also been recognized for several municipalities spread over the whole territory for floods and mudslides as well as landslides, according to this judgment, and another also published on Friday in the Official Journal.
