NVIDIA and Valve would work hand in hand to optimize the experience as much as possible GeForce Now on the Steam Deck.
As a PC/portable console hybrid, Valve’s popular device offers access to cloud gaming services such as xCloud and GeForce Now. However, the experience is currently relatively unstable, but that should soon change on NVIDIA’s side.
An experience for the moment not really on a small cloud
Currently, cloud gaming on the Steam Deck is not fully supported. It is indeed relatively unstable and makes the whole thing quite indigestible. To take advantage of such services, it is necessary to use a third-party application, since there is no native application yet, as well as a browser (preferably Chromium).
However, on the Steam Deck, this maneuver makes it difficult to handle games launched via the Cloud by browser, due to compatibility problems on the controls. Never mind, NVIDIA and Valve are joining forces to optimize all of this when it comes to GeForce Now.
In any case, this is what Andrew Fear, product manager for GeForce Now, indicated to gaming pc. The two industry giants are working on ways to correct the aforementioned problems and optimize the GeForce Now experience on the hybrid portable device.
Ongoing talks
The main issue that makes using cloud gaming services less than ideal on the Steam Deck is that the Steam OS runs on Linux. This operating system does not have the same advantages as Windows or Mac in the field of the Cloud. The reason is that Linux is mainly updated by a large community of developers, where industry giants are slower to react.
It is therefore in particular on this point that NVIDIA and Valve will be looking. Discussions to optimize GeForce Now on the Steam Deck have started anyway, but it could still be some time before a solution is fully rolled out. ” NVIDIA and Valve are both very interested in getting GeForce Now to run best on the Steam Deck. However, it is not yet in our plans to create a native application on Steam. says Andrew Fear.
We will therefore have to wait a little longer before seeing the fruits of this close collaboration. Still, such a partnership would certainly be beneficial for both companies. This would make it possible to run the games in the best way without worrying about the hardware (provided you have a very good connection). Especially since NVIDIA announced during CES 2023 that GeForce Now would soon host an “Ultimate” level, carried by nothing less than an RTX 4080.
