Valve’s handheld PC Steam Deck will be released on February 28th. The first deliveries are to be sent on this day, Valve writes in a blog entry. The Steam Deck can be ordered three days in advance, on February 25th. A valid reservation is required.
Those who were quick enough to grab a Steam Deck reservation last July will now have to wait for an email from Valve. The company plans to send weekly emails to people with reservations starting February 25. Anyone who receives such an email has three days to order the Steam Deck. If you miss this deadline, the next person on the waiting list gets a chance.
The staggered approach means that even a reservation is no guarantee that you will actually get the Steam Deck on February 28th. When Valve started accepting reservations last July, the servers quickly became overloaded. According to Valve, if you want to make a new reservation, you have to wait until the second quarter.
Mail delivery at 7 p.m
The emails with a link to buy the Steam Deck should be sent chronologically, according to Valve’s blog entry. If you have made a reservation earlier (or enforced against server problems), you can order earlier. According to Valve, the very first emails will be sent out on February 25 at 7 p.m. If you don’t get an email then, you have to wait at least a week. The reservation fee of four euros is to be offset against the price of the Steam Deck, and according to Valve, shipping is free.
The Steam Deck is Valve’s mobile gaming PC and was originally scheduled to be released in December before Valve pushed the date back to February. The system runs on Linux-based SteamOS. Three variants with different memory variants are available for purchase, which cost between 420 and 680 euros.
