Steam: Valve takes action on games with AI-generated content

Artificial intelligence is everywhere today, the tool is multifunctional and makes it possible to improve the daily lives of users in a lot of areas, but concerning art, the subject is more delicate. Some creators do not hesitate to use AI to generate content without too much effort, misleading users, and that, Valve wants to avoid it at all costs.

Gabe Newell’s company has just taken measurements regarding video games published on Steam and using AI-generated content. Now, developers are required to report whether content was created using artificial intelligence, and if so, how AI was used. A simple rule, detailed right here:

  • Pre-generated content : any type of content (images, code, sounds, etc.) created using AI during development. In accordance with the Steam Distribution Agreement, you agree that your game will not include content that is illegal or infringing on the rights of others, and that it is consistent with your marketing resources. During the evaluation process, we will evaluate your game’s AI-generated content in the same way as non-AI-generated content. We will also check that your game meets its commitments.
  • Live generated content : any type of content created using AI while the game is running. In addition to respecting the rules previously stated for pre-generated content, you will need to indicate the safeguards put in place so that no illegal content is generated by the AI.

Regarding this illegal content, Steam updates its overlay in-game to allow players to easily report these deviations. Valve explains that it made these decisions after long discussions, the firm is well aware that the subject is complicated and can embarrass some developers. Valve does not exclude the possibility of reviewing these rules as they evolve in the future.

There is, however, one point on which the firm is categorical: adult content of a sexual nature generated live by AI. If Steam has been selling clearly pornographic titles for several years now, the contents live for adults with artificial intelligence, it’s nothe platform states that “we are unable to publish this type of content at this time”.

You can find a bunch of games Steam on Gamesplanet.
