According to Steam’s September Hardware and Software Survey, Windows 11 still can’t convince the players.

The Steam survey in July told us that it was present in nearly 37% of the PCs surveyed. In August, this share was close to 40%, only to fall in September to the same level as in July. The dominant operating system still remains Windows 10, with an overwhelming share of 58%, or 1.99 points more than the previous month.

Windows 10 still in the hearts (and PC) of Steam gamers

It has now been two years since Microsoft deployed Windows 11. However, the latest version of its flagship operating system does not necessarily attract followers. It was recently established that only one in four computer users use Windows 11.

Despite extremely timid progress which has stagnated more or less at the same level for a year, Windows 11 still seems more popular among gamers. In any case, this is what we can learn from investigations into Steam’s hardware and software. Given the dominant nature of Valve’s platform, this data has some relevance.

According to the latest, Windows 11 occupies second place on the podium, with a share of 37.43%, or 1.79% less compared to the previous month’s survey. For its part, Windows 10 still remains in first place, with 57.97%, or 1.99% more. Very far behind, with shares oscillating between 1 and 2%, we have Windows 7, macOS, which intends to improve on the gaming aspect, and Linux.

A Windows 11 that is biding its time?

All in all, Windows as a whole therefore occupies a colossal 95% share of Steam users. However, this will change slightly from January 2024, when Windows 7 and 8 will simply cease to be supported on the platform.

The trend between Windows 10 and 11 could also be reversed in the more or less near future, with Microsoft not hiding its plans to more or less subtly push users to upgrade to the latest version of its operating system. The day of full abdication of Windows 10 has not yet arrived, however. Maybe even the famous AI-boosted Windows 12 will succeed where Windows 11 failed? The future will tell.

In addition to the operating system, the Steam survey provides us with other interesting information, such as the fact that 67.87% of users’ PCs feature an Intel processor, with a certain dominance of 6-core models (34.70% ). On the graphics card side, first place is held by the RTX 3060 at 6.27%, or 1.40% more than in August. Like Microsoft when it comes to operating systems, NVIDIA reigns supreme in this area among Steam players, with a 77% share. Some habits definitely die hard.
