Stefanie Stahl: This is how we can now deal with fears

Accept the situation as it is.

It is unchangeable now. Do not increase your anger, you pull yourself down, but do not change anything. Take a short distance from thoughts that make you angry and tell yourself clearly: These thoughts do not take me a step further. Then you can mentally put them in a soap bubble and let them pass.

If you are concerned about your health

Check with your mind whether these concerns are justified or whether you are getting too deep into them. The mind usually knows the right answer. The fact is that the Corona Virus is harmless to most people. The only thing is that the hospitals are not overloaded, so that the care of the sick is guaranteed.

Fear is always about the future.

Therefore, focus your attention on the now! The here and now! Unfortunately, our brains are able to come up with horror scenarios that all have one thing in common: they are fantasies that play out in the future. You have nothing to do with the current situation. Therefore, push these thoughts aside and think about what you can do now. Activities distract. A good way to deal with stressful thoughts is to write them down. For example, you can plan to spend 10 minutes a day dealing with your fears and writing them down. Whenever you find yourself thinking about your fears again the rest of the day, you can remember that everything is written down and no worries are lost and you can turn back to the here and now.

If you feel existentially threatened by the crisis

Again, be careful not to slip into total disaster scenarios. Always make it clear to yourself that these thoughts will not help you. Instead, think about solutions to the problem. And also trust that the federal government has no interest in bankruptcies and will do a lot to support those affected. Life will definitely go on after the crisis.
