RB Leipzig’s supporters rarely receive a friendly welcome in Bundesliga stadiums. However, a special incident occurred at newly promoted Heidenheim: Butyric acid was distributed in the guest block the night before the game. At kick-off the smell hasn’t completely gone away.

Supporters of the Bundesliga soccer team 1. FC Heidenheim distributed butyric acid in the guest block the night before the home game against RB Leipzig. The club confirmed the incident to the “Bild” newspaper. Even during the game in the afternoon there was still a smell of vomit in the Voith Arena. Around 1,500 Saxony fans were there for the game in Heidenheim.

Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt strongly condemned the action after the game. “I lack any form of understanding, some people lack intelligence,” said the 50-year-old, visibly upset: “Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, including about the RB Leipzig construct. But I’m ashamed of something like that, it’s not appropriate. I would also like to apologize on behalf of the club, a protest can also be conveyed in other ways.”

The club also commented. “We apologized to our guests from Leipzig before the game and cleaned the guest block as best we could this morning,” said Petra Saretz, Head of Organization and Licensing: “Of course we will look into this matter.”

During the game, Heidenheim fans also displayed various banners in protest against RB Leipzig. For example: “Even after 15 years it remains the same: Leipzig’s football murderers.” Meanwhile, the group of lawnball athletes showed a choreography before the game and burned several pyrotechnic torches.

Football was also played: RB Leipzig secured a 2-1 win thanks to a late goal and thus still has their sights set on direct qualification for the Champions League. Benjamin Sesko (42nd) and Loïs Openda (85th) scored for RB. Nikola Dovedan only managed to equalize for the brave Heidenheimers, who can still expect to stay in the first league despite the defeat. RB is now at least secure in fifth place in the table. Due to the recent successes of the German teams in the European Cup, this should also be enough to qualify for the premier class at the end of the season.

RB Leipzig, often called “Construct RB” by many football fans, has been viewed critically for years. There had been fan protests against Leipzig at numerous games in the past.
