Solidarity with her partner Noah Baumbach and the striking authors: Greta Gerwig makes a strong statement at the “Barbie” premiere.
“My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach, is not here,” the director said Sunday. “He passionately supports the fight of the Writers Guild of America” (WGA), continued Gerwig. The American Writers’ Union has been on strike since May this year.
“From the first line to the last cut, this film is his work just like everyone else’s,” said Greta Gerwig according to media reports also via Baumbach. She even referred to the “Marriage Story” director as “Barbie Girl”. Nothing in “Barbie” happened without him. And nothing in Hollywood progresses without writers. Among other things, the WGA advocates better conditions for its members for productions from streaming providers such as Netflix and Amazon.
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach: productive partnership since 2010
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have been a creative team since 2010. Back then, Gerwig was acting under Baumbach’s direction in the comedy “Greenberg”. Baumbach wrote the script for the film with his then wife Jennifer Jason Lee (61).
Since 2011, Gerwig and Baumbach have also been a couple privately. In 2012 they co-wrote the screenplay for Baumbach’s directorial work “Frances Ha”, which made Gerwig an indie icon. In 2022 she played under his direction in “White Noise”.
“Barbie” with Margot Robbie (33), who also produces the film, and Ryan Gosling (42) will start in German cinemas on July 20, 2023.
