Mega strike at the EVG – no trains for 50 hours

From Sunday evening, the railway and transport union (EVG) will paralyze train traffic again. Train passengers have to be prepared for the longest strike so far in this year’s wage conflict. The plan is to stop work from Sunday evening 10 p.m. to Tuesday night 12 a.m. – nationwide. The third round of wage strikes is expected to last a total of 50 hours. Deutsche Bahn is particularly affected, but other train providers are also following suit. Deutsche Bahn announced that it would completely stop long-distance traffic for the two days. All ICE and IC trains would remain in the depot and “mostly no trains would run” in regional traffic either, according to a railway spokesman.

The reason for the further strike is the sluggish talks that have been going on for more than two months. The union wants at least 650 euros more per month for employees, or 12 percent for the upper income earners, over a period of 12 months. Deutsche Bahn, on the other hand, wants to focus more on the conclusion of the public service. The strike hits Hamburg particularly hard, as the Pentecost holidays start this weekend.

With the consumption in Germany we would need three earths

The earth’s available natural resources for this year would already be used up today if everyone lived as they do in Germany. If all inhabitants of this planet produce as many emissions and consume natural goods as we do, then a total of three earths would be needed, according to the environmental organization Germanwatch.

The information is based on calculations by the Global Footprint Network, headquartered in the USA. The network not only calculates a global earth overshoot day – the so-called Earth Overshoot Day, which fell on July 28 in 2022 – but also for each individual country.

Last year, Germany also landed on May 4th. According to the network, the main problem in the Federal Republic is greenhouse gas emissions. But the consumption of raw materials must also be significantly reduced if we want to protect the planet in the long term. Because we should always remember one thing: “The young and future generations and poor people, especially in the south, have to deal with the most serious consequences of this decades-long overexploitation,” says Christoph Bals, Political Director of the network.
