Strong earthquake shakes Manila – numerous aftershocks

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 shook the Philippine capital Manila and the surrounding regions early on Saturday morning. The center of the quake was in the Batangas province, just under 93 kilometers south of Manila, at a depth of around 100 kilometers, according to the Institute of Seismology and Volcanology. Shortly after the first tremor, an aftershock of magnitude 5.1 followed.

In the last few days a lot of rain has fallen in Manila, streets were partially flooded. Major damage from the earthquake is not expected, however. “If the center of the quake is so deep, we do not assume any serious damage or even a tsunami,” said Renato Solidum, director of the institute, on the radio.
