Student desperate: – “Have to study longer because of outdated curriculum”

Anyone studying business law at the JKU needs a lot of patience: for the past three years, we have been waiting for a new course schedule. In autumn it should be ready – the subject will be completely redesigned.

We’re really desperate,” complains Martin Gabl. The JKU student wants to study business law (WiJus), but fails because of the bureaucracy. His studies are already delayed. “And that’s why some of my colleagues lose grants.”Bureaucracy JungleBackground: Three years ago, the University of Linz changed the curriculum for economics. The innovations have an impact on the WiJus subject because many courses in the two disciplines overlap. However, the course schedule for WiJus has still not been adapted to the new circumstances. Therefore, the approximately 800 law students have to find their way in an administrative jungle and consider: Which lectures from the new course plan count how much for my old degree? “Working on a solution” The Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) at the JKU is familiar with the topic. “We help with advice, and there is already a draft for a completely new curriculum for business law,” says ÖH boss Vanessa Fuchs. The newly designed subject could start in Linz as early as autumn. Fuchs explains the long revision period – three years – by saying that the course is now being put on a completely new footing. The JKU is not aware of any problems with the degree, there are corresponding replacement courses. In individual cases, efforts are made to find solutions.
