Styling can be a challenge on cold days. We say hello to the onion look and reveal what makes the layering look so special.

“There is no bad weather, only bad clothing!” – the first sentence that goes crazy when you complain to your grandparents about the cold. That’s right … but doesn’t mean that we have to do without stylish looks. The “onion principle” in layering keeps us warm and flexible: If it isn’t as icy as expected, we just take off a layer. But how do you do that without looking and feeling bulky?

Styling: These layers belong in the onion look

Styling starts with the underwear

With the right underwear. There are a few things to consider here: Because there are several shifts, the likelihood of sweating increases – especially when we are out and about a lot or switch between inside and outside. So after the shower, first of all a deodorant you can trust! Use cotton briefs to keep your private parts fresh. The fabric is breathable, which means that no moisture is formed. This is important because it otherwise serves as a breeding ground for fungal infections or leads to unpleasant smells.

The golden onion look rule: from thin to thick

The golden rule: several thin layers are better than one thick one. We start with a base layer, which, as described above, is made of cotton at best. This is followed by the warmth layer, which can be a sweater, for example. Then a matching coat for insulation, i.e. protection against rain and wind. The different layers store the heat and at the same time prevent moisture from penetrating.

The nice thing about layering is that our summer and spring wardrobe can fit seamlessly into the winter style. This not only applies to light fabrics, but also to bright colors. Pink shirt dress? Not an issue: gray oversized knitted sweater over it, chic flared jeans and black sock boots. Also works with the satin pants from your last beach vacation. By mixing different fabrics such as cotton, new wool and silk, it gives a monochrome look a noble depth.

Even downstairs it quickly becomes uncomfortable with several shifts. So that everything fits without pinching, it is better to use tights that are one size too big than one that is too small! Short sports shorts on top protect your kidneys and you can bend down without hesitation if you wear a skirt. And of course: don’t forget your socks. Not a fan of tights? Then the thermal leggings under the baggy jeans will do the job too. With the right boots you can completely round off your look. Especially with winter boots, in which several layers are worn, it doesn’t hurt to take one size larger so that everything finds its place.
