Colorful sneakers, print hoodies and co. radiate youthfulness. But there are also items of clothing that make the wearer look older than he or she is. We’ll tell you what they are.

Garments speak their own language. They themselves and the way they are combined with other pieces to create a style often says a lot about the wearer. At least we think so, right?!

Do you belong to those who want to send out a certain message with your style or do you randomly pull your clothes out of the closet in the morning? In any case, the fact is that there are items of clothing that make us look younger or older than we actually are. And even more: If you look a bit older because of your clothes, you can often radiate more seriousness. Do you want that? Or maybe you don’t want to look older than you are at all? Then you can get an overview here of which items of clothing make you appear older.

5 clothes that make you look older

1. Cardigan or twin set

A short cardigan that ends at around the waistband or a twin set, i.e. a set consisting of a cardigan and a shirt, will quickly make you look older than you are. If the cardigan also has a high round neckline, this usually doesn’t look particularly advantageous and also looks a bit stuffy.

In order to still look a little upbeat and young despite this piece of clothing, you should wear clothing that forms a drastic contrast with it. Destroyed jeans or sexy pants with a leather look would be conceivable here. Striking statement pieces of jewelery such as necklaces or earrings could also “save” something here.

2. Tweet

Garments made from this fabric sometimes look really great on influencers and fashionistas. But you should not underestimate the effect and the challenge of styling these pieces. Simply and carelessly combined with other perfectly normal pieces from your closet, tweed can quickly look very old-fashioned and unfashionable. Rescue: Combine with rough boots or metallic pieces.

3. Skin-colored nylon stockings

They were really in in the 80s, but let’s be honest: These tights didn’t really stand up to anyone. The worst thing is when the pantyhose also shimmers conspicuously. That looks really old-fashioned and unflattering. In this case it is better to fall back on opaque black tights or – in summer – on the natural look with well-groomed bare legs.

4. Plump pumps

Pumps with a graceful approach and a small tip can upgrade any outfit. However, caution is advised when it comes to special pumps with clumsy block heels, which tend to be round and clumsy overall. This is by no means advantageous and quickly becomes very “slippery”.

Do you have such shoes in your closet and would you like to wear them because they are so comfortable? Then definitely wear them with casual long boyfriend jeans. Just not with a suit or a tight skirt – possibly made of tweed!

5. Oversize garments

Even if the trend towards oversized pieces is unbroken: This style doesn’t suit everyone. Especially pieces with wild patterns in a folklore style or animal print can quickly make the wearer look older. This is perhaps because they give the impression that the wearer wants to hide something or does not dare to grab tighter clothing.
