Successor to Sommaruga – Herzog and Baume-Schneider on SP two-ticket – News

  • The SP parliamentary group presents the Federal Assembly with a two-way ticket with Eva Herzog and Elisabeth Baume-Schneider to succeed Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga.
  • This was announced by SP parliamentary group leader Roger Nordmann on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann was also up for selection.

The two official SP Federal Council candidates are called Eva Herzog and Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. On Saturday, the parliamentary group opted for a two-person ticket with the Council of States from Basel-Stadt and Jura. Both received an absolute majority in the third ballot.

24 votes fell to Herzog, and Baume-Schneider was elected with 23 votes. The Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann still had 14 votes, as parliamentary group president Roger Nordmann announced.

Herzog: “Great atmosphere”

Herzog and Baume-Schneider thanked the defeated fellow candidate. At the same time, the Basel Councilor of States, Herzog, was proud of her nomination. Thanks to her two fellow competitors, the hearings took place in a “great atmosphere”. She is now looking forward to the next one with excitement.

Her Jura council colleague Baume-Schneider recognized the retired Allemann as a committed young woman. Your own career is now entering a new stage. She holds up the colors of the SP as a humanitarian party for the diversity of Switzerland and is very happy about her candidacy. SP co-president Mattea Meyer explained that with the SP ticket, three women are now definitely represented in the Bundesrat.

Herzog in the role of favourites

Eva Herzog is the crown favorite for the United Federal Assembly. The 60-year-old belongs to the liberal wing of the SP and is therefore a viable option, especially for the middle-class majority in the National Council and Council of States. As a representative of a city canton and a strong economy, Herzog has good arguments for an office in the Federal Council.

Only outsider chances are given to Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (58). The fact that she took office is probably mainly due to the fact that the canton of Jura has never had a Federal Councilor before. An obstacle could prove for her that with her election to the Federal Council there would be a Latin majority in the government.

A week ago, the SP parliamentary group followed the party leadership’s proposal by voting for a two-person ticket. The waves had already risen inside and outside the SP. Zurich Council of States Daniel Jositsch, who had expressed an interest in running for office, had to give up.
