Marco Odermatt from Nidwalden narrowly wins the Super-G in Colorado and thus secures the small crystal globe in this discipline for the first time.

The pedestal and the ball decision

  • 1. Marco Odermatt (SUI) 1:06.80 minutes
  • 2. Andreas Sander (GER) +0.05 seconds
  • 3. Aleksander Kilde (NOR) +0.34

“Today I drove two races: the Super-G of the day and also the one around the ball,” said Marco Odermatt. And the man from Nidwalden won both races. At the end of the speed weekend in Aspen (USA), the 25-year-old celebrated a narrow victory in the Super-G.

To win the small crystal ball, he “only” had to be 3rd, now he easily won the 1st ball in this discipline ahead of his Norwegian pursuer Aleksander Kilde (3rd). After the giant slalom and overall World Cup last year, it is the 3rd crystal award of his career for Odermatt.

With his triumph in Colorado, the Swiss made history at the same time: He already clinched his 5th victory of the season in the Super-G – before him nobody has managed that in one winter. This day should be a consolation for the thankless 4th place at the World Championships.

Behind Odermatt, Andreas Sander surprisingly made it onto the podium. The German was beaten by just 5 hundredths and celebrated his first career podium. Kilde remained third and he said of Odermatt: “He deserved it, it was a good fight.”

The other Swiss

The other Swiss made for a happy day. Four Swiss Ski athletes were among the top 15, with Loïc Meillard coming closest to the podium. The Valaisian was only 17 hundredths off the podium in 5th place. Justin Murisier, who was not allowed to start in the World Championship race after the team’s internal decision, finished a strong 7th.

Here’s how to proceed

While the technicians will still contest two giant slaloms in Kranjska Gora next weekend, things will get serious for the best speed specialists at the season finale in Soldeu from March 15th. In the Super-G, 5 Swiss will be allowed to start with Odermatt, Murisier, Meillard, Stefan Rogentin and Gino Caviezel.
