Surf target no. 1: TikTok overthrows Google

The US Internet company Cloudflare has been operating the “Cloudflare Radar” service since 2020. The company uses it to monitor global Internet usage and publish the results in rankings, among other things. The list of the most popular domains has been topped by TikTok for the first time this year. The social media platform displaced Google from the first place of the most frequented domains.

The news is a foretaste of the full annual evaluation that Cloudflare plans to publish in the next few days. The ranking of the most popular domains can already be seen on the Cloudflare site. It shows these surfing destinations behind TikTok and Google in places 3 to 10: Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Twitter and WhatsApp.

Google.com, including Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books and News, was the undisputed number 1 last year: from September to December 2020, no other domain competed with Google for this place. At that time, Tiktok was still in 7th or 8th place. In February, March and June 2021, the social network, which is particularly popular with young users, made its breakthrough to 1st place, and TikTok has held this position uninterruptedly since August 2021, according to Cloudflare Radar.

TikTok’s trademark is particularly short videos. The platform thus promises easy entertainment and certainly also benefited from the pandemic. According to US analytics company Sensor Tower, TikTok hit the 3 billion download mark in July 2021.

The Tiktok algorithm is said to know its users particularly well. The platform should be able to put together particularly interesting content for each user. Time and again, however, Tiktok comes under criticism. In the USA, a former content moderator has just filed a lawsuit against the social media platform and its parent company ByteDance Inc.
