AVM starts with a new Fritz!Box and a new heating thermostat at the MWC 2022! So if your home is smart, I’ll tell you the most important information about the Fritz!Box 5590 Fiber and the Fritz!Dect 302 below. In addition, I was able to learn a lot about the future of AVM in the conversation.

In addition to exciting new products, trade fairs such as MWC 2022 give us the opportunity to pester manufacturers with exciting questions! Since we want to report more about the Smart Home topic in the future, I have therefore made an appointment with AVM – if you don’t know the name, you have probably heard something about AVM’s products: the Fritz!Boxes.
The latest Fritz!Box is called “Fritz!Box 5590 Fiber” and is equipped for ultra-fast connections, both in terms of connections and hardware. If you are currently connecting your home to the fiber optic network, you can achieve speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second with the 5590 fiber. In addition, thanks to integrated SFP modules, the router is equipped for all fiber optic connections commonly used in Europe. For fast WiFi, there are four WiFi 6 antennas that transmit in both the 5 gigahertz and 2.4 gigahertz networks.
“What about WiFi 6E?” and easy fiber optic setup
As Doris Haar and Sebastian Luther from AVM told me, AVM is trying to make the use of the new fiber optic technology as easy as possible. This is how routers and fiber optic networks should coordinate in the future – a typical plug-and-play principle. If you are currently already equipped for fiber optics, the whole thing is a little more complicated.

When I asked why the latest Fritz!Box doesn’t already use WiFi 6E like many top smartphones, I got a very simple answer: AVM is initially concentrating on technologies that are actually available in the majority of devices. Although they are very happy about the activation of new frequencies, WiFi 6E is a topic for the future and the optimization of current technologies is currently more important.
If you are interested in VPNs, there is also new support for WireGuard in addition to the IPSec protocol. The protocol is faster to configure and you achieve a faster connection setup in comparison. The use of the proprietary operating system Fritz!OS has also been improved again – since many users use the extended view, this has become a little easier. Setting up VPN networks, for example in your employer’s secure network, has become even easier.

If you are interested in the new possibilities of the Fritz!OS, you should take a look at AVM’s press release on the Fritz!Lab. For example, your Fritz!Fon can use a ringtone to indicate exactly who is calling.
New heating thermostat with a battery life of up to three years
AVM’s second announcement at the MWC 2022 is the smart Fritz!Dect 302 heating thermostat. This can be controlled either via five buttons or via the Smart Home app from AVM. Unlike the predecessor, however, three instead of two AA batteries are used, which extends the battery life to up to three years.

Statistics about the heating control can be seen directly on the display of the Fritz!Dect 302, and the smart thermostat works together with other sensors as usual. For example, the heating is automatically turned down when a window sensor reports that a window has been opened.
Prices and availability
You pay 69 euros for the new Fritz!Dect 302 heating thermostat. The market launch should be right after the presentation, but there are still no offers for the new smart home product on the Internet.

Unfortunately, AVM has not yet been able to tell me how expensive the new Fritz!Box 5590 Fiber will be. The market launch is scheduled for spring 2022. As soon as we know something new about the purchase options for the new AVM products, we’ll let you know at fiber optic speed!
