Surprise contraction in UK GDP in October


PARIS, December 13 (Reuters) – The British economy contracted unexpectedly in October, according to data published on Wednesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.3% after an increase of 0.2% the previous month while economists polled by Reuters on average forecast stagnation (+0.0%).

Compared to October 2022, however, GDP increased by 0.3%, compared to a consensus of 0.6% and an increase of 1.3% the previous month.

On the foreign exchange market, the pound sterling fell by 0.2%, to 1.2531 dollars against 1.2549 dollars before the publication of this statistic. (Writing by Claude Chendjou, edited by Kate Entringer)
