Unveiled on January 20, the new sports connected watch
from Suunto comes to refresh the mid-range of the Finnish brand. Here’s everything you need to know about the Suunto 5 Peak.

The new smartwatch from the far north is intended above all for sports enthusiasts of outdoor activities. In short, a more affordable Suunto 9 Peak!

A sexy and lightweight multisport smartwatch

After the 9 Peak, Suunto comes to revisit its mid-range Suunto 5. A welcome overhaul, as this smartwatch proved quite disappointing in our test. The 5 Peak therefore has a new design which, although close to that of the brand’s other productions, is lighter than ever. The beauty weighs only 39 grams despite being 12.9 mm thick. The case is 43 mm. Icing on the cake, the bracelets are detachable, which was not the case on the original Suunto 5.

Mid-range requires, the Suunto 5 Peak uses inexpensive materials. It will thus be necessary to compose with a steel bezel and a plastic case. The 1.1” transflective screen retains the same definition as before, i.e. 218 x 218 px. However, it is integrated into a smaller case this year, which should allow a reduction in the borders and a less stunted appearance than on the Suunto 5. The lighting is still provided by LEDs.

80 sports profiles and a long battery life for the Suunto 5 Peak

On the interface side, there shouldn’t be any big changes. The 5 Peak, however, recovers the music control screen launched with the 9 Peak. It also seems that there is now a screen dedicated to sunrise and sunset times. The rest is identical to what exists on the other watches of the Finnish brand: energy level, VO2Max, sleep time, heart rate, steps and calories.

The Suunto 5 is able to track up to 80 different sports. It also takes over the navigation system turn by turn of the 9 Peak. The adaptive training program is also included, which should appeal to people who want a little motivation to get into the sport or maintain a regular activity.

In terms of autonomy, the 5 Peak remains in the nails of its ancestor. You can use it for about 7 days in classic use. In GPS mode, the autonomy varies between 3h and 100h depending on the capture mode used. Admittedly, it’s not really exceptional since you have to make big sacrifices to reach 100 hours of use in Tour mode.

In the end, this Suunto 5 Peak does not reinvent the wheel. Apart from the neater design, the Finnish smartwatch strongly resembles its ancestor. We would have liked the addition of an altimetric barometer at least, but this function remains reserved for the brand’s higher-end models.

Suunto 5 Peak price and availability

The Suunto 5 Peak is available for pre-order since January 20. The first deliveries will be launched on 1er February 2022. On the price side, it costs €299, or €30 less than the Suunto 5 in its day.

What do we think of it at Clubic?

It’s hard to be really thrilled with the Suunto 5 Peak. Admittedly, the newcomer is much less cumbersome than its elder. But this Peak model does not bring much else in its luggage…

In 2022, it’s hard to forgive the lack of SpO2 or altimeter barometer tracking, especially on a sports watch dedicated to outdoor activities. We therefore do not really see where the Finnish brand is heading, which is beginning to accumulate a lot of delay in the face of the competition.

Let’s hope that a future test proves us wrong!
