A report from the Coyote Theft and Post-Theft Recovery Observatory reveals the most stolen vehicle category in France, between SUVs, hybrid or electric cars.
In 2023, there were a lot of increases that we could have done without. Electricity prices, certain transport tickets or even car thefts. In France, the latter increased by 11.1% compared to 2022 if we refer to the theft declarations made to insurance companiesor 5% according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. The increase is in all cases a reality with which we must deal. We know that certain models are more popular with thieves than others, and now we know thethe category of vehicles most likely to be stolen in the country.
It’s’Theft and Post-Theft Recovery Observatory Coyote Secure 2024 which reveals the ranking. The company was based on the number of vehicles found thanks to his tracking system. She was also able to calculate whether this or that category is more affected in 2023 than it was in 2022. In first position, we find the SUV. They represent 62% cars found via the Coyote solution. The risk of theft is, however, stable, which is not the case for the other two categories.
Which SUV, hybrid or electric car is most likely to be stolen in France?
Behind the SUVs, there are hybrids who are most at risk: 4.3 vehicles stolen per 1,000which shows a increase of 31% compared to 2022. Finally come the electric carswhich despite a lower number of flights than the others, is the category which is experiencing the greatest increase: 53% in one year. The report notes that thieves are generally interested in the most recent models, less than 3 years on average. This is no surprise: they hope to get more from it on resale.

But this is also explained by the fact that 90% of flights are carried out electronically, without forcing the car. “Electronic theft prevents damage to the vehicle, which will therefore retain its full value upon resale. Our findings in the field confirm this since our teams recover 93% of vehicles with little or no damage.“, explains Benoît Lambert, general manager of Coyote.
