  • On May 5, 2023, the end of “SWAT” was announced after Season 6.
  • Three days later, the US broadcaster CBS rowed back and extended the crime series for a final 7th season.
  • The cancellation of two other crime series has now been announced.

May 9, 2023 update: US broadcaster CBS is rowing back. After it was announced on Friday that the crime series “SWAT” will end after the current 6th season, the broadcaster decided to extend the series for a 7th season after all. “SWAT” should then finally conclude this, according to the official statement by the President of CBS.

We’ve listened to our viewers and their enthusiasm for “SWAT” and have agreed to renew it for a final 13-episode season to air in the 2023-2024 air year.

Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment

After leading actor complained loudly on social media about the end of “SWAT” after the cancellation of his series, he now uses the same way to celebrate the extension with fans of the series. Along with his co-star David Lim, he thanks the vociferous fans who have championed their series.

According to the actor, it was only thanks to the large fan base of “SWAT” that the series was able to be extended and to give her a fitting farewell.

But in addition to all the joy about “SWAT”, two other series now have to give up. For the series adaptation of the action comedy of the same name “True Lies” from 1994, it’s over after just one season.

The series faced a lot of opposition after CBS didn’t cast it with the original ’90s cast. At that time “Terminator” Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) played an unequal couple.

It’s also over for “East New York” after one season. NYPD 74th Precinct officers discard their badges, closing the files. Since both shows only lasted one season, it’s unlikely that they’ll make a comeback like SWAT.

The “SWAT” team laid down their arms. After the current sixth season, Shemar Moore (“Criminal Minds”) as LAPD Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson and his colleagues will not return to the set of the CBS series.

The news about the end of the series may come as a surprise at first, because the series gained massive popularity with the start of the 5th season and was able to reach an even larger audience. But as early as March 2023, showrunner Shawn Ryan (“The Night Agent”) spoke in an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter” about the problems of his action crime series.

At the moment it is up in the air whether “SWAT” will be renewed for a seventh season and that has nothing to do with ratings. This situation would never have been seen 15 years ago. There’s no reason the show shouldn’t go on other than that the economics of the business are changing. CBS and Sony will not or will not find a way to make a Season 7 work economically.

Apparently, the US broadcaster has not found a way to continue funding the series. Hence the rather abrupt end with the 6th season. The final episode of “SWAT” is therefore already waiting for us on May 19, 2023.

In an Instagram video, leading actor Shemar Moore also spoke up and called the cancellation of his series a “f***ing mistake”.

I don’t think we’re done. CBS officials will either wake up and realize they made a mistake, or Sony will do the math and realize this isn’t the right move. I hope we can find a compromise and get back together to continue this show.

A reboot of the 1975 series of the same name, SWAT follows Moore’s Hondo as his loyalty to his work and homeland tests him. Also starring in the action series were Alex Russell (“Seelen”), Jay Harrington (“Suits”), Kenny Johnson (“Bates Motel”), David Lim (“Quantico”), Patrick St. Esprit (“Unsolved”) and Rochelle Aytes (“Mistresses”).

In Germany you can see the series finale of “SWAT” on the pay TV channel Sky One and on free TV on Nitro.
