Everyone who lives in Sweden can get vaccinated. However, in order to receive the Covid certificate there, you need a Swedish social security number. These are only available to foreigners who can prove that they want to stay in Sweden for more than a year. Thousands of people cannot – for example exchange students or job seekers.
They may therefore have to do regular tests after vaccination in order to benefit from the advantages of vaccinated people – above all the opportunity to travel to other countries.
Not in accordance with the law
However, this practice contradicts EU laws, reports the Swedish newspaper “The Local”. These state that certificates should be issued in the country in which the vaccination took place. A lawyer now wants to ensure that the state fulfills its duty.
“There are some countries that have problems complying with these regulations”, the lawyer Charlotte von Mentzer is quoted in the article. In addition to Sweden, examples are Austria and Italy. Von Mentzer works for an NGO that deals with incorrect applications of EU regulations. “We were told that Sweden was trying to find a solution to the problem. But actually it has to be your duty, not just a wish. “
The Swedish department assured the newspaper that it was working on being able to issue a certificate to people without a social security number.
With the EU certificate, also called Green Pass, it is possible to travel back and forth between the different countries of the European Union. Switzerland relies on its own certificate, which is recognized by the EU. (vof)
