Switzerland is the country where the world’s first cable car took off and where it can’t be steep enough to build a cable car. Pioneers and engineers have created masterpieces – and we will continue to work on it for a long time.

1. Steep, steeper, stoos

The funicular from Schwyz moves up the Stoos like a giant snail with four houses. When it comes to speed, on the other hand, the snail really outperforms itself. Because the new funicular provides some top performance: Within seven minutes, the cable car covers 1,700 meters and 744 meters in altitude. And with a gradient of up to 110% it is the steepest funicular in the world.

Another small highlight awaits at the beginning of the year: daredevil and costumed racers conquer the slopes at the bathtub race in January.

2. Dizzying view on the Kleinmatterhorn

The Klein-Matterhorn at 3883 meters is not only the highest mountain railway station in Europe, but the gondola lift also has four very special cabins. From the outside you can recognize them by the glittering Swarovski crystals and whoever starts the journey up with them will be able to look through the glass floor at the glacier landscape after a few minutes.

3. With a lot of turning on the Hochstuckli

Like its big “sister”, the Titlis Rotair, the Stuckli Rondo gondola lift also turns in the canton of Schwyz. From Sattel, the journey leads with two turns and a view of the Ägerisee and the Hochstuckli family mountain. And the next highlight is waiting not far from the mountain station: the 374 meter long suspension bridge.

Now the Schiffländi in Stansstad comes to life in the winter months as well: seven disused gondolas are available directly on Lake Lucerne to take passengers to Käseland. In the well-insulated gondolas, a house mix is melted in a fondue caquelon while you let yourself be enchanted by the glittering lights in the lake or in the opposite direction.

A gondola that still does the work for which it was created, only more magical: In the Grächen ski area in Valais, passengers are accompanied to the Hannigalp by Little Red Riding Hood, the brave little tailor and co. Each story lasts as long as the train journey.

There are many gondolas in the Pizol ski area, but only one that stays on the ground: The sauna gondola at the Berghotel Gaffia provides hotel guests with sweaty and relaxing moments.
