Long jumper Simon Ehammer surprises at the end of a mixed season with victory at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene.

Big cheers in the Swiss camp at the Diamond League final in Eugene. Long jumper Simon Ehammer won the competition. The Swiss achieved 8.12 m in his first attempt. When World Cup third-placed Tajay Gayle from Jamaica reached 8.22 m in the fourth round, the Swiss immediately countered with exactly the same distance. Thanks to the better second attempt, this was enough to win.

Unlike most other disciplines, the men’s long jump in Eugene did not feature the absolute best in the world. Miltiadis Tentoglou, the world champion from Greece, was missing, as was the World Cup runner-up Wayne Pinnock from Jamaica – the two had reached 8.50 m and more in Hungary. Or the Chinese Wang, the world champion in Eugene 2022, was not there.

Ehammer convinces with consistency

But Ehammer doesn’t have to hide with his performance. The Swiss record holder (8.45) proved that he is one of the best in gusty conditions. He impressed with consistency beyond the 8 m mark: 8.12, 8.10, 8.06, 8.22 were the marks from the first four attempts.

Eugene and Ehammer – that seems to fit. The Swiss had already been able to celebrate in the mecca of US athletes a year ago. At that time he won bronze in the long jump. In 14 years of the Diamond League so far, Ehammer was the first Swiss to win a diamond.
