The Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri has signed until 2024 with Olympique Lyonnais, announced Monday, August 23, the club, which has paid six million euros for the former Liverpool player. The transaction also includes five million euros in bonus, said OL who hope to have found with this attacking midfielder the successor to star Memphis Depay, who left for FC Barcelona this summer.

Aged 29, Shaqiri has 96 caps for the “Nati”, with which he eliminated France in the round of 16 of the Euro (3-3 after extra time, 5-4 on penalties) on June 28. Trained in Basel, passed by Bayern Munich between 2012 and 2015, the player from Kosovo has been playing in England since 2015, in Stoke City and then Liverpool. During his three seasons with the “Reds”, he notably won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

After those of the Italian international left-back of Brazilian origin Emerson Palmieri (Chelsea) and defenders Damien Da Silva (Rennes) and Henrique Silva (Vasco de Gama), this recruitment aims to strengthen OL’s workforce, which has no victory on the clock after three days of the championship. “His arrival, after that of the reigning double European champion Emerson, confirms that Olympique Lyonnais is giving itself the means, despite a difficult start to the championship, to achieve a great season in the League 1 and in the Europa League which also remains an objective ”, announces the club.
