Switch: an update on console sales and the top 10 Nintendo games as of June 30, 2023, with a sensational debut of the new Zelda

It’s time for financial statements at the beginning of August and nintendo so communicated its results for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, i.e. from April 1 to June 30, 2023. In order not to change, we will therefore take stock of the big figures shared, starting with Switch sales. At the last point, we were at 125.62 million copies sold and we are now counting 129.53 million, or 3.91 million consoles sold during these three months, always reducing the gap a little more with the DS, which holds the record. Yes, the trend is upward compared to the beginning of the year and above all it is much more than at the same time last year (3.43 million). Big N. therefore succeeds there quite a tour de force and can clearly take its time before launching an inevitable successor. In addition, the OLED model is now dominant at the start of the fiscal year and the launch of a version in the colors of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom probably helped a lot. nintendo notes in passing that direct sales have increased in all regions of the world (sell through), while those from resellers (sell-in) have declined in Europe and America.

As for games, 52.2 million copies were sold over the quartermuch better than last year, and than at the start of 2023, bringing the total to 1.08835 billion (or 1,088.35 million). This is partly explained by the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a behemoth that has totaled 18.51 million in sales as of June 30 ! With over 10 million units sold in three days, it was obvious that long-term success would be there. This makes it by far the best start to a game Zeldawhile Breath of the Wild has just exceeded 30 million! The latter had clearly not done so well when it was launched at the time, for obvious reasons (the Switch just launched, the Wii U having been a flop and less popular with the general public).

top 10 games first party is obviously affected with an entry from this new adventure of Link in ninth position and a reversal of place between a mario and a pair of Pokemon. The question will now be whether this record start will translate into a rapid progression to the top of the rankings or if it was only a very strong temporary craze. nintendo note, however, thatin addition to sales to BOTW owners, a growing percentage of players who do not own it have acquired TOTK.

Once is not custom, nintendo however, did not communicate on the sales of its other titles not included in this ranking. However, it is specified that only Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are the only two “million sellers” in this first quarter of fiscal year 2024which means thatAdvance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (read the test) clearly did not attract crowds. For the other games we had details about the previous time, the variations should also not be too large.

Also note that dematerialized accounted for 47.3% of software sales this quarterwith almost 30% of downloadable versions of games available in box, the rest being DLCsdigital-only titles, subscriptions to Nintendo Switch Online, etc. It is also noted that TOTK physical sales were strong.

An update on the rest of 2023 was made, highlighting the line up diversified productions first party already announced, starting with Pikmin 4 recently released (read the test), Return of Detective Pikachu, Super Mario Bros. wonder which we have no doubt will sell well, especially since it is the first episode in side scrolling 2D unprecedented in 11 years, WarioWare: Move It!the remake of super mario rpgthe rest of the Additional circuit passes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the Zone Zero Buried Treasure DLC of Pokemon Scarlet and Purple. On this subject, the release of its second part in the winter of 2023 is put on hold, suggesting that it is only at the beginning of next year that we will benefit from it.

To finish, a point on Super Mario Bros. The film was done. Estimates are 168.10 million viewers for a box office of $1.349 billion as of June 30the best for a feature film from a video game license and the second in terms of animated films, with a positive effect on game sales mario and other derivative products. You can also pre-order the Blu-ray which will be released on August 23, sold €19.99 on Amazon.

In all cases, nintendo recorded its best first quarter to date with a 50% increase in sales (461.3 billion yen) and a net profit of 181 billion yen, up 52.1%. While the course of the yen is depreciated, it is all the more impressive. However, it does not change its forecasts for the rest of the fiscal year, which are expected to decline, therefore preferring to remain cautious.
