Kurz wants to forego continued payment of wages

The signs are growing that Austria’s ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz could soon switch to the private sector. According to media reports, he waived the continued payment of his politician salary. He is entitled to this – but only if he is not working.

According to the “Kronen Zeitung”, the former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz waived his political salary. As an ex-ÖVP parliamentary group leader and member of the National Council, he would be entitled to around 75,000 euros over the next six months, the paper writes. “His understanding of politics has always been to serve the country and work for the people,” the newspaper quoted ex-Chancellor circles as saying.

In any case, he would only be entitled to receive continued payment if he did not take on a new job. However, it is likely that Kurz will switch to the private sector in the near future. The 35-year-old announced his complete withdrawal from politics on December 2.

In the end, Kurz himself left his concrete plans for the future in the dark. He wants to dedicate himself to new tasks in the new year. First of all, the focus should now be on his family, the ex-chancellor revealed. He had become a father for the first time a few days ago.

The public prosecutor’s office is investigating, among other things, suspected breach of trust against him. His political ascent is said to have been promoted by polls paid for with taxpayers’ money. Kurz denies the allegations.
