Sylvie Meis in the GALA interview: “You get richer in your soul”

A lot has happened at Sylvie Meis in the past few months. GALA asked her how she was feeling.

One project chases the next, which she is very happy about. In addition, Sylvie Meis, 43, is the proud mom of an aspiring soccer talent and has been happily married for a second time since last year. She also regularly plans a lot of time for charities. At a lunch that GALA initiated in April 2020 with the jeans label MAC, she was present as a DKMS ambassador. She quickly realized that she was on the same wavelength as MAC boss Eveline Schönleber in terms of fashion and woman power. And so the result of this lunch was not only a generous donation for DKMS patients, but also a joint jeans collection.

Sylvie Meis in a GALA interview

GALA: First of all: Congratulations! Your son has just signed his first professional contract with the Danish premier league club Esbjerg fB.
Sylvie Meis: I am incredibly proud that Damian’s biggest dream has come true on his 15th birthday. The hard work and the passion that goes with it led to this professional youth contract. We signed it there together.

Everything always seems to be going smoothly for you. Is that impression correct?
As for business, it’s true: I’ve just had one of my prime years. I feel tremendously blessed because we’re only a small team at Meis Media. I was lucky enough to be booked as a celebrity for great and big campaigns.

And how does it look in private?
In my private life, my last year was great in that I married my husband. An incredibly beautiful moment. We caught a small gap in September where it was possible to get married abroad during this crazy time. My son moved to Denmark in August because he had the chance to become a professional footballer there. Of course I didn’t want to take this chance away from him – but it was really tough for me and as a mother it almost broke my heart.

Have you got used to the idea by now?
It took a long time, actually until Christmas, until this heavy feeling in the heart and in the body became a little less. In fact, it doesn’t get any easier because as a mother you just want to have your child at home.

Is there a possibility that Damian will move to Hamburg and how his father once played for HSV?
You never know what will happen in the future. At the moment he is very happy in Denmark.

Sylvie Meis: “I just can’t afford to let myself go completely”

Your next project is now starting: With the jeans label MAC you are launching your own capsule collection, four models made by Sylvie Meis.
That was a lot of fun because I was also creatively involved. I already knew the brand as a child. I bought MAC Jeans with my mother in Belgium. It was the only boutique there that sold really good things. (laughs)

Do you have any prominent style role models when it comes to jeans?
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has a classic, feminine style and often wears jeans. And Olivia Palermo combines them very stylishly. Jeans are indispensable, especially now with the comeback of the eighties. Neon blazer combined with stone washed jeans – hot, hot, hot! There are few items of clothing that are trendy from morning until night, but jeans are definitely one of them.

They say you have to be focused to achieve certain things. How do you motivate yourself?
I just can’t afford to let myself go completely and just watch Netflix and eat “Kinder Bueno”. Of course I do something like that too, but in moderation. If I have to go in front of the camera for my new lingerie campaign, I won’t eat dessert two weeks in advance. Then the delicacies are ready again! (laughs) What is important to me: I once had an eating disorder – and I never want to experience that again. I now know exactly how to eat and how to exercise.

You almost only have women on your team. Why is that?
I was never the woman who had a classic manager. A man who tells me what to do. I wasn’t and never will be. I stand for female power, for personal responsibility. I know what I want and I have a great manager by my side. We do things with our small group of women that big companies normally do. That makes me proud. I think women need to be more supportive of each other. We mustn’t fight against each other, we have to stick together, indulge ourselves in things and be happy for other women when they achieve something. It makes you richer in your soul.

“The Weekends Are For Romance!”

In September you celebrate your first wedding anniversary. Are there any plans?
I think we will then be in America, where I received my application.

You like to emphasize that you have a modern marriage. What do you mean?
During the week my husband is in his studio, four hours away from Hamburg, where I work with my team. But: The Weekends Are For Romance!

What else are you looking forward to this year?
On Holiday! I want to enjoy, travel, see my friends. Above all, I want to see my son, my parents and my 95-year-old grandma more often. I could cry right now when I say that. I miss them so incredibly that I only wish I could hug them all more often.
