Despite its title, Tales of Kenzera: ZAU has no connection with the license of RPG Japanese Bandai Namco. Unveiled last December during the Game Awards, it is a metroivania very promising signed Surgent Studiosan entity set up by Abubakar Salima young British actor that players know best for lending his voice to Bayek In Assassin’s Creed Origins and which could recently be seen in Napoleon inasmuch as Thomas Alexandre Dumas. It is he who will double the protagonist Zau and which narrates the new trailer released as part of the Xbox Partner Preview.
This story around mourning will therefore lead the young shaman Zau has Kenzera after making a deal with the god of death Kalunga with the aim of bringing back his Baba (father) to life. But to do this, he will have to defeat three dangerous spirits. However, he can count on the power of masks (Moon and Sun) to progress through this labyrinthine world. Two powers are quickly presented, namely the Pierre de Bamba to freeze enemies and water and Akida’s Spear, while the menu preview shows the skill trees related to both masks. Throughout his journey, Zau will also cross paths with NPCs and will have to face a whole bunch of traps and trials. Brief, lovers of metroidvania will be on familiar ground even if a change of scenery will be required given the Bantu culture serving as inspirationwhich probably few players know.
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is still expected on April 23, 2024 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and PC. A download code for the latter platform can be purchased at a discount via Amazon priced at €17.99.
