Basel celebrates the opening of Roche Tower 2. A lounge atmosphere is intended to bring employees back to the office.

At a height of 190 meters, you can see how Roche wants to lure employees back into the office from their home office: It is the lounge on the 47th floor, the top accessible floor of the 205-meter-high Roche Tower 2. The floor offers a fantastic view of Basel . And should encourage people to work.

Because part of the concept of the pharmaceutical giant is to bring the employees back to the workplace with a lounge atmosphere.

During the pandemic, many of the employees noticed that it was pleasant to work in different environments. “We have now also created opportunities for them to meet on site in different environments and also to find places where they can concentrate on their work,” says Jürg Erismann, Roche site manager in Basel. And not only in the home office, but now also in the office – for example on the 47th floor of the Roche Tower 2.

The construction work will continue even after the construction of Tower 2. In the district, this is not only well received, especially because of the construction noise.

Since the completion in June of this year, the employees have been coming back – to one of the 50 above-ground floors of the tower, which is over 200 meters high. About 60 percent are back at the Roche site, the rest are still working from home, according to Erismann.

High and sustainable

The new tower should not only set new standards in terms of jobs, but also in terms of energy consumption. It is one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient buildings in the world, says Erismann. The 205 meter high building is heated with waste heat, cooled with groundwater and CO₂ consumption has been significantly reduced compared to conventional office buildings.

Although construction was completed this summer, the tallest structure in Switzerland was officially opened today – in the presence of Swiss President Ignazio Cassis.
