Tamron arouses curiosity with an ideal zoom for Sony full-frame hybrids

To meet the needs of photographers looking for a versatile zoom, ranging from wide-angle to standard focal length, Tamron has developed a 17-50mm constant aperture F/4 in a compact barrel. Usually, this type of focal range is mainly found on cameras with APS-C sensors, but Tamron has decided otherwise with this wide-angle zoom intended for Sony FE mount hybrids.

Tamron has an already well-stocked range, and is walking on the toes of a certain 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD. With such a focal range, the future 17-50mm F/4 Di III VXD seems to be the ideal companion for the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD, also in the manufacturer’s catalog.

With its VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear AF motor and its fairly short focus, from 19 to 30 cm, the latest model allows some close-up shots but above all allows you to indulge in video , in particular by mounting its equipment on a stabilizer. Finally, it uses a 67 mm filter ring, fairly standard in the Tamron range, and allows configuration from the Tamron LensUtility suite.

Price and availability

If we know that this Tamron lens should take its first steps in the fall of 2023, the brand remains stingy with details and has not yet communicated prices or more precise technical specifications. It only remains to wait before getting your hands on this lens as promising as it is intriguing.

For information, the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD was launched last October at a price of €999. We therefore expect a similar price for this 17-50mm F/4 Di III VXD.
