It is now a little ritual at the beginning of the year. January 17, 8.7 million households French people will be reimbursed by the tax authorities for part of the tax advantages from which they benefit (200,000 more than last year). This mechanism, put in place four years ago with the withholding of income tax, can however be tricky if your personal situation has changed in 2020.

Next Monday, many taxpayers will therefore receive a transfer in solid euros to their bank account, from the tax administration, entitled ” ADVANCE CREDIMPOT “.

605 euros per household on average

This advance will help preserve the purchasing power of the French, especially during the health crisis, with an average amount of 605 euros per household concerned. “, Indicates Bercy in a press release.

But beware, this amount corresponds to 60% of the reductions and tax credits collected for 2020 and declared in spring 2021 (this total amount appears on the last income tax notice, received last summer). Therefore, if your benefits have decreased in 2021, for example because you have reduced the services of a cleaning lady, you could receive an overpayment this month. In this case, you will have to reimburse it during the summer …

Schematically, the taxpayer who has accumulated 5,000 euros in tax benefits in 2020 will receive 3,000 euros in advance on January 17. He is therefore supposed to collect the rest in July or August. But, if in 2021, his reductions and tax credits were limited to 2,000 euros (which he will specify in his next tax return), he will therefore have to reimburse 1,000 euros of overpayments!

Taxpayers for whom the tax administration does not know the bank details (around 235,000 tax households all the same) will receive this advance in the form of a letter-check that they will receive by post by the end of the month of January.

An advance for certain advantages

Remember that not all tax exemption devices are covered by this measure. The advance paid by the administration in January only concerns reductions or tax credits relating to donations, the employment of an employee at home, childcare costs, nursing home accommodation costs, rental investment expenses (Duflot, Pinel, Scellier, DOM, Censi-Bouvard) and union dues.
