“I immerse myself in other worlds”

I love going to flea markets early in the morning on the weekends. With the busy atmosphere and the many interesting things, I forget about time and immerse yourself in other worlds. I enjoy salt shakers with Bakelite lids from the 1920s as well as bright tablecloths from the 1970s or desk lamps from the Bauhaus era. If I’m lucky, I’ll come home with a treasure. For me, the most important thing is not to buy something, but rather to take a trip to another time.

“Silence and vastness”

After work or on the weekend, I love walking in the forest with my dog or riding my horse. The silence, the smell, the space – I can really switch off and be in that exact moment, and there is nothing else. If I have little time or want to escape from everyday life at home, I lie down on my acupressure mat. Within a few minutes I manage to relax and fully concentrate on my breathing.

“Working on old wheels is my meditation”

We rented small workshop space in the backyard, right across from our apartment. There I unscrew old bicycles and put them back together using new technology. Handicrafts are a great compensation for journalistic mental work. And in the end you end up with something that you can put to good use – and that no one else has. For example, a 60-year-old Dutch bike that rides like a charm but is guaranteed not to be stolen.

“I love hotel bars”

For me they are the perfect place to immerse yourself. For a few hours there, even in my hometown, I feel like I’m on a short vacation somewhere else. Hotel bars are dominated by tourists or business travelers always a very special atmosphere. And just entering the lobby, which you usually have to walk through, does something to me. I’ve even stayed in a hotel in my own city. This is the crowning glory of escaping everyday life!
