A 14-year-old British girl died because of an everyday object. Her parents warn about the dangers of deodorant.

After the tragic death of Elhana in hospital, of a little girl and her aunt in a fire and the suicide of Justine, 15, we learn of the death of a 14-year-old girl from Derby, England, after have sprayed deodorant in her room. Giorgia Green succumbed to a cardiac arrest.

His parents learned that other youngsters had been victims of the same accident, to which the British Aerosol Manufacturers Association (BAMA) replied that the warnings were clear on the bottles. By law, these must be printed with the words “keep out of reach of children.” But for Giorgia’s parents, the writing was much too small.

On the site of the BBCwe can read the declarations of the father, Paul: “People don’t know how dangerous the contents of these boxes can be”. The bereaved father added: “I wish no one else in the country – or the world – went through what we personally went through. […] We don’t want our daughter’s death to be in vain.”

Teenage girl died from deodorant

Autistic Giorgia liked to spray deodorant on the blankets, a comforting scent that helped her relax. The teenager was found unconscious in her room by her brother on May 11, 2022. The door was open and the amount sprayed was “normal”.

An investigation concluded an accident. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, “deodorant” was mentioned on 11 death certificates between 2001 and 2020. However, they could amount to much more, because the specific substances are not always mentioned on these certificates. In Giorgia’s case, it was “aerosol inhalation” and not “deodorant”.

Her parents now want to warn other parents about the dangers of deodorant. The statement “keep out of reach of children” would not be sufficient, the BAMA would recommend adding “solvent abuse can kill instantly”, in particular to dissuade those who would like to intentionally intoxicate themselves for recreational purposes. For Giorgia’s parents, it would even be necessary to put “the use of solvents can kill instantly”, because their daughter did not abuse them.

An everyday object to be used with care.
