Uncomplicated free mailer with a high security factor
In our test, Telekom’s free mail service already impressed with its user-friendly interface and a high level of security and data protection. Only the e-mail storage, which is limited to 1 GB, could limit eager users in the long run. If necessary, they can upgrade to the relatively inexpensive Mail M version. Telekom Mail does not offer excessive additional services apart from the calendar and address book, but it fulfills the central tasks of an e-mail service with flying colors.

Telekom has been operating one of the most successful e-mail services in Germany for almost 30 years. At that time it was still called T-Online Freemail, today it is called Telekom Mail. But while the e-mail service had little competition back then, many e-mail providers are now vying for the attention of customers. Is Telekom Mail still one of the spearheads today?
Telekom Mail: Three packages, two of which are free
In addition to a free mailer (Telekom Freemail), the e-mail provider has also been offering you an optional, paid subscription called Telekom Mail M (EUR 2.95 per month) for some time, which adds a number of functions and offers various advantages. In addition, there is Telekom Mail S, a mailbox with reduced advertising for Telekom connection customers at no additional cost.
With the free Telekom e-mail inbox you get 1 gigabyte of storage, as well as with the aforementioned Mail S-Abo, which Telekom customers use free of charge. Only the paid Mail M subscription offers 15 gigabytes more storage and you can even expand it by one gigabyte per month if required. But the three e-mail packages also differ significantly in other ways.

Comparison of Telekom e-mail packages
In addition, you can book storage space for the online storage MagentaCloud with all packages – 3 GB with Freemail, 15 GB if you are a customer with a Telekom connection. Telekom Mail S also has reduced advertising compared to Freemail, Mail M is completely ad-free and offers you configurable spam protection. MagentaZuhause customers also get 50 SMS and 5 MMS with the Mail M subscription.
Login and service: no-frills message center
Managing and sending e-mails is quick and easy with Telekom, the website in the well-known corporate design works very quickly, menus are clearly integrated on the left side. There you will also find the spam area, your trash and drafts of your emails.
You can ensure more order by storing your emails in individual folders. You can also easily create this using the right-hand menu. You are also offered a separate area for your photos, in which all photo attachments from your e-mail history are displayed individually again. You can limit the storage period for your mails to 3, 14, 30 and 90 days, but you can also save them indefinitely.
The best email providers for disposable addresses
Advantages and disadvantages of each provider
Disposable email addresses are handy. You can use them, for example, to log in to online services anonymously. We compare several providers for trash mails and temporary addresses.
Unfortunately, a dedicated page for logging in is not available. Instead, a detour via the rather overloaded portal t-online.de in the browser is necessary. Alternatively, you can use the Telekom Mail app.
It is almost identical to the browser version and is available for both iOS and Android. A third way to access your e-mails is via standard e-mail programs such as Outlook.
Other Telekom Mail functions
Sync-Plus is included in all three Telekom e-mail packages. Your e-mails, contacts and appointments are automatically synchronized between different devices. You use the Sync Plus app for this on mobile devices and on the PC. Other e-mail services usually have more convenient synchronization options for this. At Telekom, the process is comparatively complex.

Whether you use Freemail, Mail S or Mail M, you can choose between the e-mail addresses included in the package and whether you want to create them with the ending @t-online or @magenta.de.
Connected to your e-mail account are other applications that you access via the menu button in the upper left corner of the screen. This includes an address book, a calendar and eCards. The latter is a selection of ready-made, digital greeting cards that you can send by email. You can also find a link to MagentaCloud in the said menu.

T-Online: Secure e-mail traffic
Data is encrypted at Telekom (SSL standard) between your devices and the company’s servers. If you use the Telekom Mail app, you should make sure that SSL encryption is activated in the software settings.
The Telekom mail app and the browser version of the e-mail service have automatic spam and virus protection in common. It also works extremely reliably against most threats. In our test, suspicious emails were almost always filed in the spam area, but our normal mailbox was not entirely spared from advertising emails.
Data protection par excellence
Did you know that Telekom is a founding member of the “E-Mail made in Germany” initiative, which, together with other services such as GMX, Web.de, 1&1 or Strato, is committed to compliance with various data guidelines. This includes encrypted data transmission as well as the processing and storage of all data on exclusively German servers.
Conveniently, e-mail services that are part of this initiative are also highlighted accordingly in your Telekom inbox. If you are worried that your account has been hacked, Telekom offers you the option of changing your password at any time.
Since Telekom only backs up data in German data centers, you as a user benefit from the restrictive German data protection legislation. According to the provider, customer data is not stored for advertising purposes, neither customer nor contract data is passed on to the company’s own marketer, Interactive Media, which is also responsible for placing personalized advertising. Electronic mail is scanned for security reasons, but not for advertising purposes.

Disturbances with Telekom Mail rather rarely
Compared to other e-mail providers, both the Telekom servers and the T-Online servers rarely have to deal with disruptions. Vodafone, for example, performs significantly worse in this area. Occasional failures of the e-mail server do happen from time to time, but they are usually resolved quickly.
