On the last day of the year the temperatures climb up to 14 degrees. It could even be enough for a record.
Fog, clouds, showers. This is the best way to sum up the weather of the last few days. And this is exactly how the start of the new week is presented. On Monday the sun shows up sporadically in the course of the morning, but a new rain front reaches us during the further course of the day. However, there is good news for Gfrörlis. Temperatures in the lowlands reach a relatively mild four to six degrees. Eight degrees are possible in Basel, Ticino and the Föntal valleys. According to «Meteonews», rain showers can also be expected on Tuesday in the whole of the Central Plateau.
Sun-seekers are drawn to Ticino
In the night of Wednesday, a warm front will probably reach us, but with a strong south-westerly wind. Although this brings rain again throughout Switzerland, even milder air masses flow into the Alpine region. The snow line rises to a good 2000 meters.
In Lugano, the year will probably end with lots of sunshine and spring-like temperatures.

On Thursday it is still cloudy, especially in the morning. Sometimes the rain sets in again. In the course of the day, however, we benefit from a high that reaches us from Spain. This dries the air up high. During the day, the maximum values are between eleven degrees in large parts of the Central Plateau and even 14 degrees in Basel and in the south of Ticino.
The zero degree limit rises to over 3000 meters by evening. So if you almost want to enjoy t-shirt weather at the turn of the year, a trip to Lugano is recommended. There are again announced up to 14 degrees for Friday, with a sunshine duration of around 7.5 hours. But even in the Central Plateau, the thermometer could climb up to 13 degrees.
Will the record be broken?
“We will analyze the New Year’s Eve weather again on Tuesday,” says Klaus Marquardt from “Meteonews”, and adds: “It could even be that we are heading for a temperature record”. According to the meteorologist, the weather model indicates that it could remain unusually mild until mid-January.
“It is not uncommon that there are individual days at this time of the year when the temperatures are upwards,” says Marquardt. What is special, however, is that this mild weather situation is so constant. A comeback in winter is currently completely ruled out.
