Tenerife plagued by ‘most complicated’ fire in 40 years

The efforts of firefighters and milder weather have slowed the progression of the flames, but the fire that has ravaged the island of Tenerife since Wednesday is not yet extinguished.

Starting from the slopes of Teide, the highest point in Spain at 3,715 meters, after a period of heat wave, then fed by violent winds and high temperatures, this fire is considered “the most complicated” that Tenerife has had to face over the past forty years.

According to scientists, these extreme events are expected to multiply and intensify in the coming years, due to climate change.

Spain is one of the European countries most affected by this phenomenon. Some 300,000 hectares were destroyed by more than 500 fires in 2022, a record in Europe, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis).

Since the beginning of 2023, more than 71,000 hectares have already burned in this country.
