David Ferrer, former world number 3, has been named captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team to replace Sergi Bruguera, the Spanish Tennis Federation announced on Thursday. He resumed his retirement from playing in 2019.

Spaniard David Ferrer, aged 40, has just been appointed for three years at the head of the Spanish tennis team and will officially take office on December 19 during a ceremony at the headquarters of the Higher Sports Council in Madrid.

The young retiree with an impeccable image is a symbol of the old Davis Cup since he played in four finals and helped his country win the silver bowl in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

An important track record

As a player, Ferrer won three Davis Cups with Spain. And in 2013, he won his greatest singles title, the Masters 1000 in Paris, a few months after playing his only Grand Slam final, lost to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros.

He retired from playing in May 2019 and takes over the captaincy of the Spanish team in Bruguera whose departure was announced on December 12.
