  • The UN is withdrawing its peacekeeping troops from Mali faster than originally planned. The reason is increased tension.
  • The UN mission “Minusma” should leave the country by the end of the year. This at the behest of the Malian military government.
  • There could be renewed conflict between the Malian army and the nomadic Tuareg.

The UN is accelerating the withdrawal of blue helmet troops from a camp in northern Mali, as announced by the UN Mali Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA) on Sunday. So they would have accelerated the withdrawal “due to the deteriorating security situation”.

Tensions between rebel groups and the army had recently intensified in northern Mali. The UN “calls on all parties concerned” not to complicate the operation.

A month and a half ago, the UN decided to end the peacekeeping mission in Mali, West Africa, and to withdraw all more than 10,000 peacekeepers by the end of the year. This after the Malian military government had demanded the withdrawal.

The conflict with the Tuareg

The Tuareg rebelled for independence in 2012, temporarily collaborating with Islamist terrorist groups. Their uprising ended in 2015 with an Algerian-brokered peace deal. Compliance with this was one of the tasks of the UN soldiers. The Tuareg accuse Mali’s military government of not adhering to the agreement and of wanting to regain control of the region after Minusma has been withdrawn.

The Malian army has been working with Wagner Group mercenaries since the country’s most recent military coup in 2021. She wants to take over the bases of the blue helmets after deduction. This could reignite an independence conflict with the nomadic Tuareg in northern Mail.
