SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Tesla will make futuristic-looking self-driving taxis, the electric carmaker’s chief executive Elon Musk promised on Thursday, without giving a timeline.

“Massive scale. Fully self-driving. There’s going to be a dedicated robo-taxi,” the 50-year-old billionaire said at the grand opening of the $1.1 billion factory in Texas, which houses its new headquarters.

Elon Musk has already announced several times the launch of autonomous vehicles, without success so far. In 2019, he said “robo-taxis” capable of driving without a driver would be available in some US markets in 2020.

Advanced driver assistance systems, which Tesla currently sells for $12,000 (about 11,000 euros), do not make its vehicles autonomous and require driver supervision.
