Tesla emptied a submachine gun magazine on the body, here is the result

Tesla recently tested the Cybertruck’s bulletproof capabilities. A user saw the electric pickup truck on an American highway, the body marked by dozens of impacts. Enough to reassure about the solidity of the exoskeleton and to make us forget the bitter failure during the presentation of the vehicle in 2019.

Since its presentation in 2019, Tesla has praised the foolproof solidity of the Cybertruck, not hesitating to compare the electric pickup to a military vehicle capable of withstanding firearms attacks. Unfortunately, this beautiful promise was marred by a totally failed demonstration which remained in the memories.

Because, a simple pétanque ball got the better of the front window, cracked right through after the impact. In Tesla’s defense, it should be remembered that the door had previously received a violent blow from a hammer, which, according to Elon Musk, had weakened the base of the window.

A Cybertruck riddled with bullets on the highways

Never mind, the billionaire promised a bulletproof vehicle and he seems to have fulfilled his promise. As reported by our colleagues at Electrek, the official Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account shared a video clip of the Cybertruck on X. We can see the electric pickup truck driving at night on an American highway, with the body riddled with bullet holes.

Elon Musk reacted in person and confirmed that live ammunition tests were carried out on the Cybertruck : “We emptied a full Camembert magazine from a Tommy Gun into the driver’s door Al Capone style. No bullet penetrated the passenger compartment,” wrote the boss of SpaceX on his social network.

Please note, however, that as the video suggests, the bullets were fired only at the steel bodywork, and not at the windows. In fact, it is impossible to know at the moment whether the windows are really capable of withstanding such attacks. Furthermore, it is appropriate to question the relevance of this test by briefly recalling ballistics.

Bulletproof the Cybertruck? It all depends on the caliber

For beginners, the M1A1 Thompson, better known as the Tommy Gun, is an emblematic weapon of the Second World War. This submachine gun, also very popular among American organized crime in the 1940s, uses 45 ACP or 11.43 mm bullets.

Although it has good stopping power, this caliber has a fairly slow ballistic speed (260 m/s), particularly due to its weight. In fact, a question arises: can the Cybertruck withstand a burst of high velocity ammunition or not? like 5.56 mm (military caliber used by NATO troops) or 7.62 x 39 mm (AK-47 ammunition)? We will have to wait for more details from Tesla to be clear.
