Tesla has just added to its configurator an option to choose between a round steering wheel or a Yoke steering wheel. Apparently, the brand’s new rectangular steering wheel is far from unanimous.
The “wow” effect of novelty around Tesla’s Yoke steering wheel has passed. The steering wheel does not really seem to meet with the expected success with the public of the new Model S and Model X. On January 6, 2023, Tesla has just updated its online configurator. The American manufacturer has just added the Model S and X with Dual Motor all-wheel drive, that is to say the model below the Plaid engine. This new version of the Model S and Model X also comes with an additional option in the configurator, which allows you to choose between the traditional round steering wheel and the new generation Yoke steering wheel.
Yoke or classic steering wheel: a no-cost option for new buyers
Whether you are daring, by opting for the Yoke steering wheel, or rather conventional, by choosing the round steering wheel, there will be no additional cost to choose one or the other steering wheel during the purchase phase. .
Both versions of the steering wheel are standard for new buyers who order from January 6, 2023, for both Plaid and Dual Motor versions. This therefore does not lead to an increase in the order price. This is not the case for buyers who have already received their Model S or X Plaid version, and who could struggle to get used to maneuvers with this new form of steering wheel.
The round steering wheel at 900 € also available after-sales
For buyers who have already received their new Model S or Model X with the Yoke steering wheel, it will be possible from March to have the round steering wheel installed after-sales. However, the change will cost you €900, which includes the steering wheel and its installation.
It also remains a good alternative for those who are still hesitating before buying. They can try the Yoke steering wheel, knowing that they can always change it for a traditional steering wheel, if they really don’t get used to this new way of driving.
One wonders, however, why Tesla did not open this possibility as soon as the first orders were opened. Buyers quickly expressed themselves on social networks about their concerns about using this new rectangular steering wheel on a daily basis.
If the Americans take advantage of semi-autonomous driving with the FSD so as not to have to maneuver their car themselves, the other countries are still deprived of it for the moment. The steering wheel therefore remains of crucial importance.
