Tesla overtaken by its Chinese rival BYD in the last quarter of 2023

(AOF) – On the New York Stock Exchange, Tesla fell by 3.92% to $238.67. The American manufacturer has just been dethroned by its Chinese competitor BYD (“Build Your Dreams”) in the sale of electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2023. The American group sold 484,507 electric vehicles from October to December, ahead of BYD, which delivered 526,409 during the same period. But in 2023, Tesla retains its global crown with 1.81 million 100% battery vehicles delivered worldwide (an increase of 38% year-on-year) compared to 1.59 million for BYD.

In the fourth quarter, Tesla produced approximately 495,000 vehicles. In 2023, its production increased by 35% year-on-year to reach 1.85 million.

In addition, yesterday we learned that Tesla recorded 1,789 new registrations last December compared to 1,645 over the same period in 2022, an increase of 9%, according to data published by the Swedish automobile industry federation Mobility Sweden. The American car manufacturer’s market share in Sweden increased from 4.6% to 6.1%.

Separately, Tesla will release its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023 after the market closes on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.

Like Tesla, BYD hopes to conquer Europe with its battery cars. The Chinese group confirmed two weeks ago that it would build a new passenger vehicle factory in Hungary.

BYD “hopes to accelerate the entry of new energy passenger vehicles into the European market and further deepen its global presence,” the group said at the end of December.

BYD has diversified into car assembly after specializing in the production of electric batteries and the construction of battery buses. The company also manufactures semiconductors.
