Tesla says it’s working on ‘the final piece of the puzzle’ of fully autonomous driving

While the FSD, Tesla’s fully autonomous driving technology, has not yet reached levels 4 or 5, Elon Musk has just assured on X that his teams are working on “the last piece of the puzzle”.

While delivery times for the Model 3 have just lengthened in Europe, Tesla boss Elon Musk has just made a new statement on Twitter, or rather X now. In response to the publication of a user, the billionaire said that his teams are currently working on the last piece of the artificial intelligence puzzle” of the FSDTesla’s fully autonomous driving system.

According to the auto industry tycoon, introducing AI into the system’s electronic brain will reduce the number of lines of codes by more than 300,000. If we have fun reading between the lines, we can therefore think that this addition will finally allow the FSD to go from level 2 of autonomy (i.e. human intervention is always necessary) at level 4 or 5. As a reminder, level 5 is assigned to vehicles capable of driving completely autonomously, without human intervention, in any condition.

The development of the FSD in the home stretch

In July 2023, the SpaceX executive said the FSD was “very close” to be able to function without human action, adding in passing that level 4 or 5 would be reached before the end of the year. “As for the current situation, I think we are very close to full autonomy without human supervision”, he said at the World AI Conference in Shanghai on July 6, 2023.

During this event, the billionaire had also confirmed that AI would be integrated into the next major software version of the FSD. It will probably be version 12, which will also mark the launch of the stable version of the fully autonomous driving software. “V12 will be reserved when the FSD is equipped with end-to-end artificial intelligence, from video to steering, brakes and acceleration”, assured Musk in May 2023. As a reminder, it has been almost 3 years since the FSD is accessible in beta in the United Statesoptional at the salty price of 15,000 dollars or via a monthly subscription between 99 and 199 dollars.
