Test drive with the new V8 – “The new Porsche Cayenne has to last a long time!”

The future of Porsche is definitely electric, says boss Oliver Blume. Nevertheless, the powerfully revised Cayenne has recently had a V8 implanted in the S version – and the announcement that it has to last for many years to come. He is well prepared for this long cycle, as we “found out”.

The Cayenne should come with a purely electric drive by 2026 at the latest. Recently it was still unclear what that would mean for the combustion versions. But Porsche Austria boss Helmut Eggert recently made it clear at a driving party at the Salzburgring that the exhaust Cayenne will continue to be built for a long time, parallel to the electric one. A large part of the model portfolio – from the Boxster T to the GT3 RS – was on lined up on the traditional race track to present itself on public roads around it. The new Cayenne is one of the most fascinating representatives of its brand, because its driving behavior never ceases to amaze given its sheer size and mass. The emotional relationship with his really sporty brothers cannot be denied. None of its competitors is so cat-like supple, at the same time brute when accelerating, precise in the curve and also optically elegant and sophisticated in the ambience Tons of heavy SUV coupe in the slalom in a way that many thoroughbred sports cars can’t do: Even with wild left-right steering, the body does not lean one iota to the side, the edge of the windshield remains parallel to the road. The possible spread between comfort and hardness is even more extreme than before. An adaptive steel chassis is standard. This also has new dampers with two instead of just one valve. This allows rebound and compression stages to be adjusted independently of each other. The 474 hp four-liter biturbo V8 – now with mono instead of twin scroll chargers – replaces the 34 hp weaker V6. It not only has variable valve control times, but also, for the first time, a switchable valve lift. This increases performance and reduces fuel consumption (13.4-12.5 l/100 km). There is always plenty of power: between 2000 and 5000 rpm there is a maximum torque of 600 Nm. The luxury ship accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and further up to 273 km/h. Tempo 200 is after 18.3 seconds on the speedometer. The engine sound depends on the position of the exhaust flaps, from quiet to sporty, but never inappropriate.Completely new interior This and everything else is set on the new central display, which, like the entire upper part of the dashboard, is borrowed from the Taycan, including the extra Display for the passenger, who can even stream Netflix there (which the driver does not notice thanks to the special coating). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work wirelessly. The air conditioning functions are operated via a glass surface on the center console, which is unfortunately moderately practical. The surface is not only always finger-tapped, it reflects strongly. Apropos: The adjustment of the exterior mirrors is not ideal either. Because it’s completely smooth, you have to watch every step. Why wasn’t the unit taken over from the Macan? You can do it blindly. The steering wheel comes from the 911. The steering itself is not direct, but you can tell that it is related to the real athletes of the house. In this regard, Porsche is in a class of its own. Delicately revised optics On the outside, only homeopathic doses were handed over, including the bonnet, fenders and lights are new. The rear end has become a bit wider. On the SUV, too, the rear number plate is now located in the lower part of the rear, as was previously the case on the coupe SUV. The wheels (20 to 22 inches in size) have a larger diameter of 790 mm. This isn’t just for looks: the increased wheel circumference enables lower air pressure and therefore more comfort. Matrix LED main headlights are standard; those with HD in their name and 32,000 pixels per side are optional. This should put an end to the days of blinded truck drivers in oncoming traffic on the Autobahn.Prices from 106,000 eurosWhen the new Cayenne rolls out to Austrian dealers as an SUV and SUV coupe in July, the 353 hp basic V6 will be available alongside the V8 and the plug-in hybrid based on a slightly weaker (304 hp) V6 to choose from. The hybrid now has a system output of 470 hp and a torque of 650 Nm. The electric motor has an output of 130 kW/176 hp and, with the battery increased to 25.9 kWh, enables a standard range of 77 to 90 kilometers. Thanks to the NoVA exemption, the E-Hybrid is the cheapest Cayenne, from around 106,000 euros, coupe 3000 euros more V6 costs a good 30,000 euros less. The Turbo GT was completely canceled in this country. And otherwise? The Taycan with probably the best handling of an electric car at a six-figure price, the Panamera as a luxury sedan with incredible steering, the sporty Macan GTS through to the GT3 RS, which proved to be a real racing car on the track and a gentleman on the country road. Only the fun Roadster 718 Boxster T was a bit out of the ordinary with a blatant starting weakness (“that’s due to the CO2 regulations,” explains Eggert). Help the brand achieve lasting success and desirability. SUVs are particularly important for economic survival – even if another model is at the top of the sales rankings in Austria: the 911. We have another special feature here in Austria: Because of the NoVA regulation, the Cayenne is mainly sold here E-hybrid version sold – Porsche expects 98 percent.
