A new distribution agreement has been signed between TF1 and Canal+ and comes into effect from today.

After more than two months of disputes, the two groups have announced an agreement for the broadcasting of TF1 channels on Canal+ channels.

TF1 channels available to Canal+ subscribers

And it is from today, Monday November 7, 2022, that TF1 content is making a comeback to Canal+ subscribers. All of the group’s DTT channels (TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films, LCI) as well as their catch-up services are therefore already available on all broadcast channels controlled by Canal+, as well as for users TNTSAT.

The joint press release published by TF1 and Canal+ is sparing in detail. It evokes a renewed long-term agreement, but without specifying an exact duration. The last contract between the two entities was for four years. This deadline is often retained for this kind of deal, it is possible that the two French audiovisual giants are linked until 2026, but without being certain.

We also don’t know the financial details of the deal. Canal+ had initially refused the conditions of TF1, considering them far too high.

A conflict that led to a loss of audience for TF1

The TF1 group’s DTT channels were cut on Canal+ media as soon as the contract was signed in 2018. At the time, the two actors had already fought over the issue. TF1 had taken legal action to force Canal+ to continue distributing its channels until an agreement was found, but was dismissed.

According to Médiamétrie, the audience share of TF1’s DTT channels amounted to 25.6% in October 2022, compared to 27.7% in October 2021. A drop of more than two points whose majority origin is without any doubt the loss of viewers linked to the disappearance of channels for Canal+ subscribers.

TF1 and football fans can in any case breathe a sigh of relief: the 2022 World Cup begins in less than two weeks and TF1 is the only free channel to own the rights to broadcast the matches.
