The entire Meta ecosystem will no longer necessarily be directly or indirectly linked to Facebook in Europe.
European users will have more freedom in managing their Facebook, Instagram and Messenger accounts. To comply with the regulations on digital markets (DMA), which come into force on March 7, 2024, Meta will make it possible to dissociate its different profiles.
Instagram and Messenger become independent
First, users will be offered the choice to manage their Instagram and Facebook accounts separately, so that their information is no longer used between the platforms. It will be possible to continue connecting the two accounts if desired.
In the coming weeks, Meta will directly inform its users that they can now choose whether they agree to share information between the group’s services.
Another size change, “Messenger users can choose whether they want to continue using Messenger with their Facebook account or whether they prefer to create a new standalone Messenger account”, we learn. An independent Messenger account might lose some features, but it will still be possible to use chats and make voice and video calls.
The games and the Facebook marketplace affected
Meta also had to adapt the way Facebook Marketplace worked. For users who want it, nothing will change. But it will also be possible to use the Facebook Marketplace without using your social network information. In this case, exchanges between buyers and sellers will take place by e-mail, and not by Messenger.
This slight dismantling of Facebook continues with the Games section of the social network. Here again, the user will have the choice of whether or not to share their information. If you do not want your Facebook information to be used for your gaming sessions, you will be limited to certain single-player titles. To access multiplayer games, in-app purchases and personalized suggestions, it will be mandatory to open the floodgates.
To adapt to European legislation, Facebook and Instagram launched a paid subscription without advertisements at 9.99 euros per month in Europe last autumn.
