The developers of WhatsApp are working on the integration of a new conversation forwarding option. This, based on a QR code, does not require saving chat history on Google Drive to transfer them to another terminal.
This feature, still under development, was discovered by WABetaInfo on WhatsApp beta versions 2.23.1.25 and 2.23.1.26.
Scan, transfer!
As you can see from the screenshots below, the process involves downloading WhatsApp on the recipient Android smartphone. Then, you have to scan the QR code displayed on the smartphone containing the conversations to start the migration to the new device.
This feature should simplify the transfer between two Android smartphones. Of course, it is only possible if the user has both terminals in his possession. It cannot therefore be used in the event of loss or theft. In fact, as mentioned in the title, WhatsApp is copying what Signal offers for transfers between iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
As it stands, to transfer WhatsApp conversations to another smartphone, you must save them in Google Drive by logging in via a Google account. It is then possible to retrieve the history on another smartphone by logging into the same account. The procedure usually takes a few minutes.
Note that transferring WhatsApp data from Android to iOS is much easier since June 2022 thanks to Move to iOS.
Regular backup, the safest way to keep your history
We do not know when WhatsApp will integrate this QR code transfer feature between two smartphones. Hopefully it will be within a few weeks, although, for the moment, it is still not accessible to beta testers.
Naturally, it will not exempt those who absolutely want to keep their conversation history from making regular backups to Google Drive, except to use another smartphone as a dedicated storage terminal.
